TOKYO: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude on the Richter scale hit northeastern Japan late Thursday.
Television report from Japan said a tsunami alert has been issued for the affected areas.
The quake, which hit at 11:32 pm Japan time (10.35 Malaysian time) is reported to have struck 66 kilometres east of Sendai.
Sendai is the city that faced the worst brunt of the tsunami following a 9 magnitude earthquake about a month ago.
According to the report, emergency workers at the stricken Japan nuclear plant in Fukushima have been ordered to evacuate.

.....The youth wing of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party said Lavigne's concert would promote wrong values ahead of Malaysia's Aug. 31 independence day.
"It is considered too sexy for us. ... It's not good for viewers in Malaysia," said Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a party official. "We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models.".....
.....Malaysia requires all performers to wear clothes without obscene or drug-related images and be covered from chest to knees. They must also refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage.....

KUALA LUMPUR: The Avril Lavigne concert in Stadium Merdeka, here, on Aug 29 has been cancelled.
Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Shafie Apdal said that the concert falls during the nation's independence period and was not a suitable time to hold such a concert.
There are a lot of events on Aug 29 and the Ministry does not want the independence and the near Ramadan month to be filled with such pop and rock culture, he said.
Moreover, the organisers were promoting the event even before they got approval from the relevant agencies, he said.
"All organisers, local and foreign, should adhere to the rules and regulations before promoting the concert and selling tickets to the public," he said, adding that Lavigne's organisers should have sought advice from the Kuala Lumpur City Council or the Ministry.
Asked if he knew why they had promoted the concert before it was approved, he said he did not know.
Asked if the Ministry's decision was in response to PAS Youth's call for cancellation, he said "no."
